Craig Charles used to be most famous for his roles in Red Dwarf and Coronation Street and for shows like Robot Wars, but nowadays he’s been reborn as the UK’s foremost champion of funk and soul music. The former performance poet and comedian has introduced up-and-coming bands like The Fantastics and Sister Henry & the Prescriptions through his Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show on BBC 6 Music, and his show has featured heavyweights of the genres like Roy Ayers, Marlena Shaw, and Sharon Jones.
Not content with life in a studio, Craig Charles regularly takes his trunk of funk on the road, DJing regularly at venues up and down the country. His DJ set was voted one of the highlights of the 2009 Glastonbury festival and this year he won’t just be spinning tunes either! The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club will be taking over Sunday of this year’s Mostly Jazz and ensuring the weekend ends on a soulful and funky high note.
