Introducing Play Entroducing

19 January 2012

Introducing are a nine-piece band who, in 2007, began playing DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing album live, and this year have moved on to their second project ‘Introducing take on Mr. Scruff’. 2012’s Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul festival-goers will be lucky enough to see both ground-breaking performances.

Endtroducing was the 1996 debut of American instrumental hip-hop artist DJ Shadow. The entire album was built around sampled elements from hip-hop, jazz, funk, and psychedelic alongside sound clips from movies and interviews. Shadow’s album received acclaim worldwide, with Q saying it was “so deftly layered that the sampling-is-stealing argument falls flat”. Endtroducing entered the Guinness Book of Records as the first album created entirely from samples.

Just over ten year later, keyboard player and guitarist Matt Derbyshire tried to play some parts of Endtroducing. He then had a thought… “Wouldn’t it be good if someone tried to play this live…and I think I know just the drummer”. Within weeks, Introducing’s drummer Mike Reed had written the whole Endtroducing drum score and Derbyshire had assembled musicians to cover the rest of the instruments. Introducing was born and they have since captivated audiences all around Europe.

One night after a show in Manchester, Introducing were paid a visit by Ninja Tunes’s Stockport-based DJ Mr. Scruff, famed for his album Keep It Unreal and its hit single Get A Move On, which sampled Moondog’s Bird’s Lament and has featured on numerous adverts. ‘Introducing take on Mr. Scruff’ was born.

Introducing will play Entroducing on Friday 29th June and take on Mr. Scruff on Saturday 30th June
