Asked by The Independent to define himself in six words, Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul stalwart and curator Craig Charles said “Late to bed, early to rise”. One look at his vast and wide-ranging CV and you’d agree that has to be true.
The Liverpool-born actor, poet, comedian, author, presenter and DJ has starred in Red Dwarf and Coronation Street, helmed shows such as Takeshi’s Castle, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and Robot Wars, made numerous other appearances as an actor, star guest and presenter, and has most importantly been the UK’s most prominent champion of Funk and Soul music.
Craig Charles has used his 6 Music show The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club to showcase previous Mostly favourites such as Smoove and Turrell, The Fantastics, and Quantic, alongside heavyweights like former Mostly headliners Booker T and George Clinton. And, he has also given artists like Sharon Jones and the late Amy Winehouse a helping hand at the start of their careers.
Before finding fame through music, Craig Charles was well-known for his acting roles and also toured the country as a comedian, with Time Out praising his shows for their “ruthless social observations, emotive poetry, and the best one-liners in the business”.
Nowadays still a star of Coronation Street and presenter of his own radio show, Craig Charles continues to find time to take his trunk of funk records on the road, DJ-ing abroad and all around the UK to the delight of thousands of loyal fans.
