Flor-escence

Experience all aspects of one of the most exciting extravaganzas in the world – CARNIVAL!

Each year carnival evolves and brings its own flavor… colour, vibrancy and fun, this visually stunning live showcase includes 25 hi-energy live performers, pulsating dance, music and a beautiful array of large-scale flora costumes that celebrate the vitality of the Caribbean and the diverse communities of Birmingham.

Presented by ACE dance and music and North Birmingham Alliance, Flor-escence is part of a full summer season of carnival events hosted across the city as part of Birmingham 2022 Festival programme.

Bringing the party to Moseley, don’t miss this electrifying experience.

We plan for the party atmosphere to continue with the audience… so festival goers move with us to the sounds of infectious Caribbean rhythms… you will love it when you live it!

Funded by Arts Council, Birmingham City Council & Birmingham 2022 Festival. For details of other carnival events taking place April – August see: www.north-birmingham-alliance.squarespace.com

Founded in1997 by Gail and Ian Parmel, ACE dance and music is a Birmingham-based dance company, who’s signature style is rooted in traditional African and Caribbean forms developed through collaborations with other artists, choreographers and musicians and expressed through a contemporary lens. We present international touring productions, youth and community led productions, choreographic research, and educational excellence.

Gail and Ian Parmel have commissioned designer Clary Salandy and Mahogany Carnival Arts to design large scale costumes for Flor-escence as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. They have been showcasing Carnival arts for the past 20 years in Birmingham and recently won top award at the Leeds 50th Anniversary Carnival in 2018 which was also presented at Birmingham Weekender Festival.

ACE dance and Music are also creating two large scale Birmingham’s Flora costumes with youth and community groups drawn from North Birmingham.  Materials for these costumes have largely been sourced from recyclable and sustainable sources, in an effort to raise awareness of the Green Pledge made by the Birmingham 2022 Festival – Let’s Go Out.  ACEDM are grateful to have received funding from Our Creative City grants and Birmingham City Council Cultural grants, which has supported the producer services offered by Moving Souls Dance.
